As the semester comes to a close the dreaded finals week approaches. Essays are due, presentations are being made, and exams are being studied for. Every coffee shop near campus is full of students grinding to finish the last bits of their work. Here are some of my tips and tricks for finals.
Create a study schedule
When finals are on the horizon we often get overwhelmed and procrastinate. It is important to map out your time and give attention to each subject. For my classes, I tend to have mostly final projects. Scheduling when I will work on what has allowed me to prioritize projects that may be due earlier while also allowing myself not to fall behind on projects due later on.
Presentations and public speaking
For those afraid of public speaking this might be a specifically difficult time for you. What helps me is to practice my presentation in the mirror and time myself. I will highlight points I miss and try again until I feel confident I know the material. When you get up in front of the class try to focus on your professor while also addressing the rest of the room. If you stand up there with confidence, even if you mess up, you will look like you know what you're doing. You got this!
Change study locations
It's easy to assume you will switch between subjects as necessary, but it's not as easy as it seems. I often struggle to switch from one task or topic to another. I have found that creating a schedule and switching locations allows me to reset my brain for the next subject. I will plan to go on campus to get breakfast and study but then switch locations after a few hours to get lunch and move on to another topic. Changing places even if it is just moving from your kitchen to your living room can really help you to hop between classes when studying.
Take breaks and give yourself time to rest
If you are feeling overwhelmed during finals that is totally normal. However, You won't obtain any information if you are falling asleep at your desk. Give yourself time to rest and go to sleep early. You cannot get it all done in a night, close the book and go to sleep!
Best of luck to everyone on your finals! You are one step closer to summer break! Be sure to keep up with me this summer by following @itsirrellavent on Instagram and subscribing to the blog.
